Lake Sturgeon

Lake Sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens) — reference image

Acipenser fulvescens

A living relic that can live over a century and exceed two metres, the lake sturgeon is an ancient, bottom-feeding fish armoured with bony scutes. Populations are of conservation concern. Ontario has closed seasons for lake sturgeon in many zones: a closed season prohibits targeting, including catch-and-release fishing. An incidental catch during a closed season must be released immediately at the place of capture. Check current rules for the exact water and jurisdiction.

Deep holes and current in large rivers and lakes; a protected, slow-growing species.
